Loudoun County Responds to Onset of Winter Temps with Hypothermia Shelter

In a vital effort to support our community’s most vulnerable members during the colder months, Loudoun County is opening the Hypothermia Prevention Shelter this Wednesday, November 15. This life-saving resource, located at 16450 Meadowview Court in Leesburg, offers a safe and warm place for single adults experiencing homelessness. The shelter, operating nightly from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. until March 31, 2024, will provide warm sleeping areas and meals.

Previously co-located within the Loudoun Homeless Services Center, the shelter has now moved to a new temporary site, increasing its capacity to accommodate more individuals in need. This new location is still conveniently near the daytime services offered at the Homeless Services Center.

Before heading to the shelter, guests must check in at the Loudoun Homeless Services Center at 19520 Meadowview Court. Here, they will receive dinner and further directions to the shelter. To ensure everyone’s safety, guests will be required to store most personal belongings in secure storage on-site. It’s important to note that Loudoun County’s firearms ordinance strictly prohibits firearms and ammunition within county facilities.

For those needing daytime services, the Loudoun Homeless Services Center, also located at 19520 Meadowview Court in Leesburg, remains open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The center offers meals, laundry and shower facilities, and information on various community resources, including food, clothing, medical and mental health care, public benefits, ID acquisition, and employment opportunities.

To facilitate access to the shelter, free bus transportation is available. In Sterling, the pickup is at the Loudoun County Transit Bus Route 82 stop near the William Watters House at 22365 Enterprise St., with a 5:00 p.m. pickup time. In Leesburg, transportation is available from the front of the Shenandoah Office Building at 102 Heritage Way NE between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m.

For more transportation details, you can contact the Loudoun Homeless Services Center at 703-771-5429. This shelter initiative is a collaborative effort between Loudoun County, Shelter House, Inc., and the Loudoun County Continuum of Care, a coalition of various organizations committed to aiding those at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
